growing PASSION, casting VISION, taking ACTION

Global Emerging Leaders is a new not-for-profit initiative that is changing leadership for young people. Our vision is to see a new generation of leaders emerge who are prepared to face our collective challenges with innovation, engagement and the practical, active service of others.

Founded in late 2006 by Mr Hugh Evans, Director of the Oaktree Foundation, along with Ms Meg Brodie, a young Melbourne based lawyer, Global Emerging Leaders delivers practical leadership training for high school aged young people.

Though fired by a desire to initiate change, young emerging leaders often face obstacles to getting their ideas off the ground. Lack of access to networks, resources and power; discrimination based on age; and especially a lack of practical leadership skills, all stand in the way of young leaders.

Global Emerging Leaders wants this to change. We are investing in young people to take them on a leadership journey which will grow their passion, develop their ability to cast a coherent vision and give them both the practical skills and pathways to take action. We equip, resource & mobilise young leaders.

Global Emerging Leaders achieves this through three mechanisms:

  • GEL Programs in schools
  • GEL Programs in the community
  • GEL Connect

Programs in schools

Global Emerging Leaders works one-on-one with schools to deliver leadership training programs. Our in-school programs are designed to work both with the emerging student leaders as well as those who have not yet shown an aptitude for leadership.

The Global Emerging Leaders' model of leadership has been designed by young people to reach young people. Our facilitators are themselves young emerging leaders. Experts in education and leadership from the education, community and corporate sectors have assisted in the development of GEL Programs.

Global Emerging Leaders programs are either modular or day based. Program costs depend on the program duration and number of students. Each program works with students to take them through a leadership journey - developing students' understanding of the components of leadership and building their skills in each area.

Importantly the leadership journey builds momentum towards action: equipping, resourcing and giving students avenues to be leaders of passion, vision and action.

Programs in the community

Working one-on-one with a school gives us a tremendous opportunity to build specific communities and deliver tailored programs. However community based GEL Programs and events allow us to work with young leaders from a diverse range of backgrounds, world views and geographic locations. GEL Programs in the community build networks, strengthen relationships and provide a platform from which to release young leaders to lead with passion, vision and action.

In 2007 our flagship program is the inaugural PASSION - VISION - ACTION Conference, 12 - 14 July, to be hosted by Trinity Grammar. Years 10 - 12 students will be invited to submit applications to be part of a three day leadership journey, culminating in an action challenge.

If you would like in registering your interest in the PASSION - VISION - ACTION Conference, please email us at info@gel.org.au

GEL Connect

Global Emerging Leaders will go beyond training alone giving young leaders both the tools and vehicles to make change.

GEL Connect links young leaders with the opportunity to undertake a practical time-bound leadership experience with other organisations. Global Emerging Leaders reconnects with participants to build on and develop their leadership skills. Participants at the PASSION - VISION - ACTION Conference will have the opportunity to be the first group of emerging leaders to join the GEL Connect program.
